OUR CHURCH VISION
Hawick Baptist Church is all about making and maturing followers of Jesus, through the gospel of Jesus, to the glory of Jesus. This vision is what we do, how we do it, and importantly why we do it.
WHAT WE DO: MAKING AND MATURING FOLLOWERS OF JESUS
We want to see new people come to trust in Jesus as their saviour and Lord, and then we want to see all those who trust in Him grow as his followers. Everything we do as a church is about seeing those two things happen.
HOW WE DO IT: THROUGH THE GOSPEL OF JESUS
How do people come to follow Jesus? And how do they keep growing and becoming more mature? The answer to both is the same: it’s through the gospel. We see people become new followers of Jesus when they believe the gospel (Romans 10:9-10) and we continue as followers of Jesus through the gospel (Colossians 2:6-7). So the thing in the middle of all we do as a church is hearing about and responding to the truth about Jesus, his sinless life, his death in the place of sinners, and his resurrection to new life (1 Corinthians 15:3-5).
WHY WE DO IT: TO THE GLORY OF JESUS
As the news about Jesus is taught and as people come to follow him and grow as His followers, we believe this brings glory to Jesus. We believe that as the one who died and rose to save us, he deserves all the glory. So we are striving to do the things that glorify him most: making and maturing followers of Jesus, through the gospel of Jesus.
STAFF TEAM
MARTIN SMITH, LEAD PASTOR
Martin became a Christian in 2009 while studying Mechanical Engineering in Edinburgh. During this time, Martin developed a love for the Borders while working for a tree surgeon over the summers. After finishing his studies, he began training to be a pastor at Charlotte Chapel and Edinburgh Theological Seminary. The opportunity then came to become the assistant Pastor at HBC in 2017, and a year later to be the Lead Pastor. Martin is married to Grace and they have 3 children. Martin loves spoon carving, sports, films, walking in the Lake District, and has no complaints when there is DIY to be done.
DAN BOSHOFF, PASTOR-IN-TRAINING
Dan’s parents taught him about the good news of Jesus from the moment he was born – he counts that as a great blessing! As he grew up, Dan became more and more convinced of the truth of the gospel and was baptised in Edinburgh at 18 years old. Dan and his wife moved to Hawick in 2024 after Dan finished his studies at Edinburgh Theological Seminary, so that he could continue training for the ministry at Hawick Baptist Church. Dan enjoys cooking, chess, and coffee with friendly folk!
